• Jaspreet Rai has recently qualified as a vehicle technician at Arnold Clark, the largest independently owned car retailer.He served his apprenticeship at Harry Fairbairn in Giffnock, Glasgow, specialising in servicing, repairing and maintaining BMW and MINI vehicles. In June 2017, Jaspreet won the Overcoming Difficulty prize at the Glasgow Modern Apprentice Awards. This award recognised the struggle he faced securing a job before he started to work for Arnold Clark.
• Jaspreet had always dreamt of becoming a vehicle technician. In secondary school, he spent some time completing work experience at an Arnold Clark branch. But then, when it came time to secure an apprenticeship, he faced a few knockbacks. Jaspreet applied for various apprenticeship and training opportunities in Glasgow. He even trialled at a number of garages. However, he never found permanent work.
• His persistence finally paid off. This didn’t deter him. He contacted many service managers across Glasgow for work experience. Finally, Harry Fairbairn BMW offered him a week’s trial. At the end of every week, he asked if he could come back the following Monday. After three weeks of this, his persistence paid off. He secured a job and enrolled in his Modern Apprenticeship programme.
• Since then, the only way has been up. Jaspreet has shown his dedication to the role by getting stuck into every challenge that’s been thrown at him. He has now completed his Modern Apprenticeship and is working, through BMW training, towards his dream of becoming a master technician.
